A multi-day, fully guided and fully handled journey into the Japan most visitors never reach. Backcountry days, lodging, transfers, food, onsen, and the corners only a local can open. Built around you.
Plan your tripMost trips to Japan skim the surface: the resort, the tourist trail, the easy parts of an incredible country. This is the opposite. From the moment you land to the moment you leave, I plan and run all of it, the days on the mountain and everything around them, so you spend your days in the snow and your evenings in the real Japan, with none of the logistics on your shoulders.
Every trip is custom, shaped around your group, your level, and the conditions. Here's one way five days can flow.
Pickup at the Hakuba bus terminal or train station, settle into your lodging, your first onsen, and a welcome dinner at a local spot. Gear check, and we plan the days around the forecast.
A guided day matched to your level, sidecountry or mellow backcountry to find your rhythm. Lunch on the mountain. Onsen and a sushi dinner after.
A bigger backcountry day, a proper tour into quieter terrain. An evening at a local izakaya.
A flex day. If conditions are good, we chase the best of it, maybe a different zone. If you'd rather a breather, a cultural day instead: Hakuba village, Matsumoto Castle, a wasabi farm, sunrise skiing with incredible lakeside views, a temple like Zenkō-ji, the snow monkeys, or a sake stop.
A relaxed final morning, last turns or a slow start, then your transfer back for departure.
I started Northbound Japan because the best of this country is the part most visitors never see. They come for the snow and leave having only touched the surface. I've spent 12+ years here, fluent in the language and at home in the mountains, so I can open the door to the real thing: the lines off the map, the onsen down the back road, the meal in the place with no English menu. I handle the language, the logistics, and the safety calls so you can just be present for it. That's the trip I'd want, so it's the trip I run.
Fluent Japanese and English, 12+ years here. The language, the bookings, and the back roads, all handled.
AST 1 & 2, Wilderness First Responder. The judgment that keeps a big day a good one.
The lines off the map, the onsen down the back road, and the corners of Japan most visitors never find.
I take care of logistics, language, and the safety calls. You just show up and live it.
